take two hot wheels, a princess tiara and call me in the morning

one day i was chatting with elias brandt, the eldest boy of the brandts. he mentioned that he wanted an orange toy car. i'm not really even sure when i heard it, but i remembered it. i finally saw one while checking out at target. FINALLY. yes. these hot wheels sat on my desk for a couple of days and i was tempted to open the package up...why not, he wouldn't notice. now that's silly. so i grabbed a princess tiara on another trip to target and it, too, sat on my desk. i didn't wear it, don't worry.

this afternoon i had the opportunity to spend a few hours enjoying the company of this family. i'm not really sure when i met them, but i do remember talking with erin over pizza at zio's. she reminded me a lot of stephanie mcguire. that was almost three years ago. and now this family has become quite the medicine and refreshment to my soul.

during these hours i learned:
* i can't compete with elias in car-floor racing. dang. he's good.
* sian is shy
* erin hears every word i say and remembers them (holy moly)
* josh plays basketball
* erin will tell me hilarious stories that make me laugh
* there's a post office in council bluffs just a couple of blocks away
* sweet fish are also called swedish fish
* elias will share everything
* elias will also help around the house (groovy)
* central air makes me happy
* being in the warmth of the brandt family is amazing (ooo, i'm so good with this writing)

i'm not always a 'kid' person so much. i get nervous around them. i feel like they're on to me...hey, i know i scare you - that's what they're thinking. but being around the joyfulness and peacefulness and curiosity made my day. it was the perfect way to end the month of july. plus enjoying a sweet meal of sushi with friend brent.

happy august e'ryone.

i sweat. a lot.

i sweat. a lot. and i mean sweat a lot. i've been to the doctor twice to figure out what's wrong with me. at first they thought it might be my thyroid...but the blood work turned out okay. apparently i just sweat. a lot.

so this evening as i was in a spinning class i noticed how much i was sweating. i mean. DAHRIPPING. then i noticed the instructor was DAHRIPPING, too. then i thought, do i like to subject myself to 45 minutes of intense spinning because i already sweat a ton so i might as well sweat it out.

and boy do i sweat it out. a lot. :)

and i love working out. spinning kicked my tail. and then body pump kicked me again. and tomorrow i'm running my 3.5 with jessica. i need to go to bed. now.

extreme makeover

an extreme makeover house turns into extreme foreclosure. read the whole thing.
interesting article.

Symbolic to our era like a sledgehammer to drywall, the biggest house that ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" ever made over -- a sprawling, four-bedroom starter castle, a three-car garage mahal with a turret and all -- has gone into foreclosure, in the 'burbs south of Atlanta.

In that particular episode of the hyper-benevolent reality show, which first aired in February 2005, it took 1,800 volunteers a week to demolish the house with the overflowing septic tank that belonged to Milton and Patricia Harper of Lake City, Ga., and then entirely rebuild a new, larger house, while the Harpers and their three children went away to Disneyland. When they returned, they had the biggest house on Ahyoka Drive, with all the appliances and furnishings, plus enough money to pay taxes on it for decades, plus a fund to send their children to college.

The house will be auctioned off, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, next Tuesday on the steps of the Clayton County Courthouse.

The Harpers had used their home as collateral on a $450,000 loan from JPMorgan Chase and fell in arrears, the newspaper reported. He ran a home security business; she mommed at home. Happy to be on television back then, they declined to be interviewed last week, when a news crew showed up from local station WSB, wanting to know wha'ppen.

The mayor of Lake City, Willie Oswalt, who said he'd helped lift a beam into place in the Harpers living room, told the press that "it's aggravating. It just makes you mad. You do that much work, and they just squander it."

You could (and will) say the Harpers had it coming, but really, we all had this coming. One thing we'll always remember about this decade was the constant home do-over fetish, in real life and in the reality of reality TV -- the constant warping of the consumer's sense of entitlement, the fairy-dust economics, the MasterCard reminder that the experience is priceless. We'll look back and think of all the time we spent watching shows where people flipped houses for easy profit, or traded spaces, or designed it to sell, or were led into rooms blindfolded to experience the paroxysms that came with new paint, new furniture, new life.

All the crying people did for the camera: They cried when television's magic wand touched them, and the hosts always cried, too, while telling the camera how good they felt making the dreams of the sick and wretched owners of substandard tract houses come true. Think of the many tears that were shed on American television over organized closets and new kitchen countertops.

Now comes a long period of tsk-tsk, and tut-tut. The schadenfreude potential is everywhere now in these newly sobered times, and it would be something if the Harpers would make themselves available for an entirely other kind of documented extreme makeover, penny by penny.

Every day, we are greeted with fresh evidence of the great American fire sale. If it was wrong to think the economy could go on forever subsisting on money that no one actually had, then it was wrong to think there was something wonderful about watching shows where people got houses for nothing, and then expect them to live happily ever after. Last week, the new numbers came out: Foreclosures were filed against some 740,000 U.S. homes between March and June alone.

There should be shows on every cable channel about that, hosted by people who don't cry, and who don't have megaphones and plastered-on smiles.

These shows should air only on analog television, after Feb. 17, 2009. A certain kind of television viewer wouldn't mind watching some more of this, please, if certain kinds of television producers are listening.

It's hard to explain, comeuppance. But surely it's as fascinating as installing laminate-wood floors.

Bring on Extreme Failure.

terms of endearment

this weekend i accompanied phileena to nebraska furniture mart. she and chris were purchasing their first new bed! as we found our way into this enormous store, kelly, a mattress extraordinaire, found us. her greeting to us included the word 'sis.'

sis? interesting. i don't remember seeing you at any family reunions.

so it got me thinking. growing up in the south, i wouldn't find it that uncommon to hear older women using various terms of endearment to the younger people...terms such as sugar, honey, baby, love. you get my drift. kenley and i call each other baby. i hear other couples refer to each other as baby. my parents. daphne and caleb. chris and phileena. the list could go on.

but lately i've heard other people refer to each other with these terms of endearment. in emails and conversations words such as baby, honey, sugar, yeah yeah yeah are being exchanged. and i sort of feel funny. i like when my family and loved ones refer to me as baby, sweet pea, baby girl ad the like. but when those words are used when i'm ordering coffee, buying shoes, working out, hanging out...and they are being said by people not in the family and loved one category, AND i'm not in the south, it's a little weird.

i do love that when kenley calls me baby my heart skips a beat. and when my dad or mom call me sweet pea, i can't help but smile. and at the end of the day, i miss the sweetness of the south and the sweet greetings.

mogo, the movement never stops

really.

a scooter + bike. really. can't we pick just one?

this sort of seems like a pretty terrible accident waiting to happen.

one minute you're pushing your 'scooter' and the next minute you're trying to navigate the huge ass wheel at the front...what's next, yep, a topple.

overheard in bathroom stall

marcia - i wish it was lunchtime so i wouldn't have to go to work (she likes to work, it's just an awkward fifteen minutes between the end of our meeting and our typical noon time lunch)

daphne - you know your department meeting is too long when everyone limps to the bathroom afterwards.

sometimes

when i open my mailbox and don't see good mail, i'll just leave it there. this was a bad habit i picked up while at asbury. hey, why carry this junk mail when i can leave it in my cpo box.

i pick up good mail and then just leave the rest of the bad mail in the mail box. i believe that this is a pretty terrible habit.

i believe that people want to race me on the road.

i will eat my favorite parts of trail mix and leave dried fruit and nuts for others.

i find airports are emotionally draining.

i like sleeping on air mattresses in other people's houses. i like to hear the voices of others. it reminds me of home.

i am quite empathetic but don't let people know.

i cry and laugh at the same time.

i make mean dance faces because.

i sometimes wait almost (ALMOST) too long to go to the bathroom.

one minute blog: coupling.

this will be the quickest blog ever. and an interesting one. so. kenley is moving to omaha. i'm really excited about it. actually i'm thrilled. as i've talked to different people about it there have been similar comments about coupling.

kenley and i've been long distance for three years and before that we lived in the same city before that for a year. we've never been or wanted to be that couple who only hangs out with other couples. we're just excited to be in the same city.

but the conversation with friends leads to this awkward part where my friend explains that she/he doesn't want our friendship to change because my boyfriend is moving to omaha.

but it got me thinking. there are a lot people in my life who are in some type of couple, too. not a traditional couple either...if it's friends who are roommates or friends who only hang out with certain friends, my friends can easily become those friends as easily as i could become that girl in a relationship.

i think that it's a little frustrating or maybe a little weird that when someone gets in a relationship friends have a hard time adjusting...but when someone is attached at the hip to a friend or friends, it's not the same awkward conversation.

does that make sense? typing this out in a minute doesn't help. :).

but. yeah. kenley is moving. i'm excited. we'll be hanging out with e'ryone, singled and coupled. at the end of the day, they're my friends and i'm their friend.

so. remember, even if you are single there are things/people you are in a relationship that can easily end up posing the same awkward question for me...when will i ever see you again? you're always with x or always doing x.

that's it.

that was two minutes. my bad. scattered.

sometimes. one minute blog. (july 17 version)

- i chew gum way too much. this is my nervous/stress habit. some people chew their nails. i chew gum. a lot of it. in college i was known to buy 10 pieces of double bubble a day. i loved that gum.

- i walk around the office without shoes on. it just feels better.

- i fall asleep at prayer. just today. i knew better. i was actually laying on the rug...and fell asleep. but i got up at 3:30 am so give me a break.

- i like to look at people's handwriting. as a kid, well even now, i like to imitate people's handwriting. i guess that's why my handwriting shifts sentence to sentence, word to word. (crocker i saw your handwriting on the cry you sent back to us with your edits!!! miss you!)

- i fart quietly at my desk and hope no one walks near.

- i play with marcia's hair. sort of in that 'i've never touched black people's hair' way. she's african american, i know.

- i dream of fattoush at el basha almost everyday. marcia and i will go for our 3rd or 4th week in a row. last week we were called regulars. if you're interested, we'll be there around 7 or 715.

counting stress

i tried counting sheep, but i began to count the different things that need to get done this week.

so. i remembered a funny thing that i do.

sometimes as soon as i get to my car after an event or the gym, i fart and i fart loudly. it's freedom. it's funny when you end up taking someone home or have a passenger in your car and you don't have the freedom.

:)

so. i came out to sleep on my couch. as a kid if i had trouble sleeping i would rearrange my body on my bed and sleep in weird positions. instead of my head at the headboard i'd put my feet there. the surprise put me to sleep.

i came out to my living room and saw an intruder. some type of bug. a huge huge huge bug. i thought it was a roach or a big black meanie bug. i think it was both or something. i hate bugs. i mean hate hate hate them. i get light headed and my arms get heavy. it's weird. there were lots of bugs that my dad had to kill after he heard me scream.

daphne was a great neighbor and wouldn't completely laugh at me when i'd call/text
her to come over and kill some type of bug.

this evening i came face-to-face with this bug. i looked around for something, anything, i found a glass. perfect. i'd cover this but with a glass. well i turned around and it was gone. squirmed into the darkness of my sunroom.

gross.

and now. i can't sleep.

there's a secret tree

there's a secret tree that beckoned me, brittany and marcia. this tree is located in the yard of a local church. we went to this church because 1) my trunk was open 2) we wanted to check out this labyrinth and 3) marcia and brittany's apartment was being shown at 2.

we sat on a bench and relaxed in an unusual cool summer afternoon. brittany's foot was stepped on by marcia. we laughed. we sat. and enjoyed the cool weather.

then we heard the call of this sweet tree. well. there was another tree that tried to call us but no one of us could respond. it was too tall. so. the second tree became our friend and fortress. there were different roars and calls sent out from the branches...some senior pictures taken. all in the embrace of the tree. cares, worries, frustrations were sent away into the leaves where they rested and were dismissed with the wind.

we were kids again. though we weren't the most limber kids. but we were kids. and it was a beautiful saturday.

baby got back

several years ago i lost a good amount of weight. i was just about at my goal weight. i remember someone grabbing my arm and and suggesting i lift weights because i had chicken arms. at that point i wasn't used to having any attention to my weight and i wasn't sure what to do.

so. baby got back.

losing weight a second time has been really interesting. i see where some of my behavior is rooted and ways that i fall into old habits. since returning to sierra leone i've had a hard time getting back on track. i didn't know that two weeks of not tracking food would affect me so much. i remember sitting and reflecting on my journey with weight watchers. i had to come to the conclusion that this is something that i will have to be aware of for the rest of my life...and that's just part of the responsibility of my care of my body. even though i sometimes want to kick people who have high metabolism in the knees...or punch people who don't like sweets in the stomach...or trip people who can go through buffets without thinking about it.

now. that's too violent.

so here's to counting what i eat. getting my fruits and veggies in this body. and taking care of this body.

it's almost the weekend. yes.

should've had one of these

http://www.uncrate.com/men/gear/transportation/terra-wind-amphibious-rv/
http://terrawind.com/terrawind.htm

not so vroom

my car is in the shop. it's getting expensive. and i can't afford it. my parents have been generous in paying for my car expenses. when i was finishing grad school one of the stipulations my dad gave me with helping me with my car was that i'd take over the payments.

that was pre-wmf.

and so now. i have a hunk of a car that doesn't work and i'm sure smells like mildew.

i go over in my head all of the things that should have made me think twice before leaving the office. it's frustrating to think that i could've stayed and just waited the storm out and watched leavenworth from a distance. or i could have stayed at patricks. i just wanted to get back to the office because i didn't think i had anywhere else to go. that's what i get for being a chief junior intern meteorologist. i've retired that now. i don't like the weather right now. i don't really trust it either.
